Shirley Busteed and JJ Kavanagh drawing the competition winners with our chairman, Con Murphy.

The Montbeliarde Society had two trips to France up for grabs at the Ploughing Championship in Laois, kindly sponsored by Coopex and Jura Betail. Prize winners were Suzanne Greally, Lismullen, Tara, Co. Meath who is off to the Coopex Expo Montbeliarde Show in February 2014 and Eamonn O’Shea, Ballinabanogue, New Ross, Co. Wexford who is off to the Jura Betail Show in March 2014. Congratulations to you both and enjoy!!

It was a busy three days and there was plenty of interest in the breed, so much so that we urgently require pedigree registered in-calf heifers for our growing number of clients.

As an added incentive to encourage former and new clients to register their stock we are offering your first heifer registration free in the coming year. Membership for the year €60.

Contact Ann Fitzgerald, secretary, 086 3367051.

Society AGM Report 2013

Mr. Con Murphy gave a brief report on his trip to the French Dairy Show earlier in the year, at very short notice, I might add. He visited four or five farms and then went to the Show where they were exhibiting new bulls coming through. He really enjoyed it and all in all we should all make an effort to get to one of these shows every few years. Thanks Con.

Four of our members attended the English Farm walk in late October on the Hemmings Farm, about 20 minutes from Birmingham Airport. We were made really welcome by the Hemmings and the English Society. They gave us handouts and then brought us to a collection yard where they were putting cows to the classifying process for the first time. It was very interesting to hear how they thought cows should be graded. We were then shown through the main herd of about 200 cows and 100 replacements. We learned a lot from out visit but what was a real eye opener was the size on the herds and how many herds over in England are going from Holsteins to Montbeliardes. The problems they have is very good for us as breeders they cannot get enough of them, especially the pedigree registered heifers. In actual fact many of us have made sale to England in the last two years. We’re very pleased with the price we got and more importantly they are delighted with the heifers they purchased from us.

During our meeting in Abbeyleix we had a lively discussion on where the breed is at and where we are going. The future looks good, but we need to push AI technicians to carry Montbeliarde straws so that they can encourage non Montbeliarde breeders to try the breed. We also need you as a breeder to register your heifers it pays in the long run as you will get it back on the sale of your stock.

Order your semen with your AI station as soon as you can, so you are sure of getting the best bulls available. If you are unsure of what bulls to use give any committee member a ring they will steer you in the right direction. Talk to people who were thinking of using the breed last year immediately. Give them a copy of our bull list or give Angela, our registrar a ring, she will send them on a copy of recommended bulls.
